Teen Drug Rehab

Teen Drug Rehab

Traditionally, drug rehab programs have been set up for adults, aged 18 and over, but in past years the number addicted teens has skyrocketed, demanding drug rehab options for younger teens who cannot wait until 18 to get the help they desperately need. Unfortunately, recent years have brought a disturbing influx of teens abusing and becoming dependent on various drugs, sending parents in a whirlwind looking for teen drug rehab options in an addiction treatment field that has historically been exclusive to adults. Although the general premise of teen drug rehab is very similar to adult drug rehab, there are certain, important differences that can make all the difference in effectiveness.
  • Teen drug rehab tends to be more gender specific in the actual rehab programs. While both young men and women may be at the same drug rehab, they will reside in separate houses and undergo different drug rehab programs. Although the distraction of the opposite sex can be problematic with adults in drug rehab, the distraction is significantly greater among teens in drug rehab.
  • Teen drug rehab often provides educational opportunities for teens who are still in school. Drug rehab cannot wait until the end of the semester, but many teens in the middle of a school year may benefit greatly from continuing with some level of education during their journey through drug rehab. Some teen drug rehab centers employ their own teaching staff to educate the teens with a curriculum created by the rehab itself. Other rehab centers have the teens bring their school books, curriculum, and tests with them to be tutored by a tutoring staff at the rehab. This can be extremely valuable as missing school can be amazingly discouraging to not only teens in need of drug rehab, but also parents.
  • Teen drug rehab tends to be more comprehensive than adult drug rehab because teens are still in developmental stages and have much to learn about not only their addiction, but life and consequences in general. More immature than most adults, teens continue to learn everyday life lessons as they go through their teenage years. Spending time in drug rehab should be no exception and the rehab program should have tools in place to ensure that teens in rehab can continue to learn the all important life lessons along with their drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
  • Teen drug rehab centers tend to incorporate extra activities and tools to keep the teens busy and interested. The approach used in adult drug rehab does not often have the same effect on teens. The message needs to be appropriate for the audience. For this reason among others, counselors and therapists need to be adequately trained and experienced to address the maturity level and needs of teens in rehab while continuing to stay true to the principles of the drug rehab psychology.

With the growth of teens in need of drug rehab, the addiction treatment industry continues to cater to the need. Over the coming years and decades, more adult drug rehab centers will incorporate teen drug rehab programs and individual drug treatment centers will open offering treatment specifically for teens in need of help who cannot wait until 18 for sobriety. Teens are especially vulnerable to addiction due to lack of experience and sense of consequence, so when illicit drugs and alcohol are introduced, abuse is almost inevitable leading to addiction. With a teenager's still developing brain, addiction can cause irreparable damage without immediate and intense addiction treatment.
