Dual Diagnosis Drug Rehab

Dual diagnosis drug rehab is indicated to address a substance abuse problem with a co-occurring mental health disorder, both of which need to be treatment simultaneously. Often, when an individual is dually diagnosed, a vicious cycle can be created that proves unbreakable without proper treatment. The effects of a mental health disorder on an individual can drive that person to continued substance abuse, serving as an escape.  But the effects of substance abuse can create and exacerbate mental health issues, only furthering the desire for escape with more substance abuse, thus the pattern of problems inherent with dual diagnosis cases.  Some of the more common mental health issues associated with dual diagnosis rehab are depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Generally, dual diagnosis drug rehabilitation programs are equipped to handle these kinds of mental health issues in conjunction with substance abuse. More complicated and less common mental health issues like schizophrenia, manic disorder, and dissociative disorders can be more of a challenge to treat with drug and alcohol abuse, and require a more specialized dual diagnosis rehab center. As always, it is important to do research to know what services are offered and the quality of those services at various drug and alcohol rehabs.

Although dual diagnosis treatment is often the most effective form of drug and alcohol treatment when indicated, it is vital to be sure dual diagnosis drug rehab is appropriate prior to a final decision on treatment. Unfortunately, many people can mistake the effects of drug and alcohol abuse with a mental health disorder. One of the tell tale signs of drug and alcohol abuse is behavioral changes, most often for the worse. When drug addicts and alcoholics display behavioral signs consistent with certain mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar / manic disorders, many onlookers can easily be fooled into thinking that a mental health disorder has suddenly developed and is clinically problematic.  Knowing the difference between clinical problems and situational problems is essential here.
There is a critical difference between a clinical problem and a situational problem, and those mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and manic/bipolar disorders that come as effects of drug and alcohol addiction are situational - meaning they are completely linked to the situation the individual is in and, but for the drug or alcohol abuse, this problem would not have arisen. Clinical issues however, are those that are not the result of any given situation, rather a real disorder that needs medical attention and treatment.  These kinds of issues are generally diagnosed and treated long before any indication of substance abuse and continue to be monitored and treated through the drug rehab process.

The process of drug rehab for those individuals who have been dually diagnosed is slightly different than drug rehab for those who have not been so diagnosed.  While they can be found in great numbers throughout the country, dual diagnosis drug rehab centers specialize in both substance abuse and mental health, employing doctors who can effectively address any mental health issues without the medical process getting in the way of the drug rehab program.  Often, medications used to treat certain disorders are very addictive and the very center of substance abuse for millions of struggling addicts.  It is the task of doctors in dual diagnosis rehab centers to identify the problems, their causes and construct an effective and safe treatment protocol for their management. The goal of dual diagnosis drug rehab is to treat all issues without having one treatment interfere with another. When appropriate, dual diagnosis drug rehab can be very effective in breaking the deadly cycle of drug and alcohol abuse and destructive behavioral issues caused by mental health disorders.
